I listened to an excerpt from a sermon by John Piper, and jotted down some statements that I paraphrased as questions that are useful for self examination.
Pick your pain or injustice. Where does it come from?
- Is your heart devoid of the peace of Jesus Christ?
- Is your heart devoid of the joy of Jesus Christ? trusting in the promises, word and work of Jesus Christ?
I also thought that when a person has a critical spirit that they are fixing their eyes so intently at the tragic events of the world, the faults of others, their own personal circumstances that they have lost sight or even remembrance of God.
If one remembers that we are to pray for our leaders in government, how can we stay critical and bitter?
If one remembers that we are to pray for, bless and love our enemies and those who persecute us, how can we remain coldhearted?
How can we drive ourselves sick with worry about world events, when we regularly cast our cares on the Lord?
I think that, myself included, that would should help each other cultivate the fruits of the spirit, especially peace and joy, through praying for and encouraging one another.Let us not spur each other on to bitterness, slander, or self righteousness by nit picking others sins, but let us spur each other on to good works. Let us sharpen each other to know the Lord better!
